ASIS Embraces SaaS
In February 2010, Shayne Bates lead a collaborative effort with two ASIS International Councils: the Information Technology Security Council (ITSC) and the Physical Security Council (PSC) to produce a major paper entitled, Cloud Computing and Software as a Service (SaaS). The entire paper is available on the ASIS web site. The paper describes how the security industry is adapting to this new, better approach. Click here to read the paper
Essentially, the SaaS model takes “on premises” software and moves it to an externally “hosted” environment. This model has been around for several years, but its growth has been accelerated with the advent of cloud computing.
Shayne states that technology and cost are not the only reasons for choosing the SaaS model. The value includes a mix of business, financial, and security reasons, including:
“Lower total cost of ownership
Speed of implementation
Reduction or elimination of capital expenditure
Shared risk by the provider
Disaster recovery and high availability
Equal, or better attainable security
Raising the Bar on Security”
